Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a set of caps?
Ask your oncologist to fill out a form. We will supply the caps once we verify the needs of the office.
What is the company structure?
Keep Your Hair is a nonprofit registered in the state of Mississippi. It is also registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3). All donations go towards making hair loss optional for people receiving chemotherapy.
What is the cost of a cold cap?
Cold caps are completely free for patients. Patients only need to pay for dry ice. If patients live in central Mississippi, they can purchase dry ice at NexAir in Pearl, MS for a discounted price using code “preserveyourhair.”
How do caps work?
Cold temperatures from the caps cause vasoconstriction that minimizes the amount of chemotherapy exposure to hair follicles.
Does wearing the caps hurt?
Most patients experience discomfort for the first few minutes of capping but eventually should not feel discomfort after those first few minutes. If patients do continue to experience prolonged discomfort, it could possibly be due to temperatures that are too low.
Who can wear cold caps?
Caps are typically used to prevent hair loss for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy because of the short treatments. Cold caps require moderate effort and diligence from the patient. You should bring a helper to help with maneuvering the caps.
How effective are cold caps?
In studies, cold caps have had a success rate of 50% with success being dictated by at least 50% hair retention. Without using cold caps with patients receiving chemotherapy that causes hair loss, there is a 0% hair retention rate. Even when a patient experiences “unsuccessful” results, there are positive outcomes to using cold caps. Hair grows back faster and stronger than if patients did not use the caps.
